8 ways in which Google Plus can be a Facebook Killer!

| June 29, 2011 | 15 Comments

Yesterday night Google calmly launched Google Plus; Google’s anticipated and rather rumored social networking website. Though according to Alexa, Google yet ranks as the top site on the web and Facebook is placed in the second position; Google the Search Engine Tycoon had unhappily lost to Facebook in the field particularly those that interest advertisers. According to comScore users spent 62% more time on Facebook than on Google linked websites that means considerable loss of advertisers annoying Google! Google had already failed on its previous attempts like Buzz and Orkut, but the Google+ project looks good and seems to have potentials to be a Facebook killer. In this post I have compiled my thoughts and some suggestions that can make Google Plus a success!

Google Plus is not aimed to be a Facebook killer, actually. The project can be simplified as “fun and easy, and more to private way to share things with friends” and it’s not just friends, you can share anything with anyone may it be your colleagues, your family, your employees or anyone. But naturally, anything aimed at sharing and social networking is unintentionally compared to the now standard Facebook! But personally I feel Google Plus, unlike buzz and Orkut can be a stronger rival.

1- Privacy! For both, Buzz and Orkut the major reasons that lead to their failure was privacy. Google Plus has a newer more innovative and natural way of sharing things. Google Plus has circles! Just like in real life you have circles, circles or friends, work and family etc. same way in Google plus you have circles and you can share specific content with specific people!

2- Easier Sharing: In Facebook you have friends, yes you can categorize them and hide content from some people and show it to others. But it’s certainly not that easy and importantly it doesn’t work always! Sharing is not that straight forward as it seems to be in Google Plus. And the best thing about it is that circles are easy to manage, just drag and drop contacts into its relevant circle. Drag them back to contacts to from the member from circle. It is indeed that easy, just drag and drop! Try the demo here! Well can a person be in 2 circles :-s ??

3- Perfect Combination: The perfect combination of Google Map, Android & Plus: Android is indeed the happening thing in the world of smartphones, even over-powering the fancied Apple’s iPhone in some parts of the world.  Now as Android gets popular  we can expect the integration to be more welcomed and to open new ways of communication.

4- Facebook is over!!! Facebook is getting over-crowded. Often you find people on your contact list, that you don’t even happen to know personally! According to a recent study, Facebook is cause of mental frustration and anxiety. The report also interviewed some users who quitted Facebook who claimed that there social circle n Facebook is undesirably large and they have to accept requests from friends who they do not actually want to befriend.

It’s more interesting to note that Facebook is losing people in US, the hometown of Facebook. In this scenario Google Plus, can definitely rescue the situation and pave its way to a better more personal social network.

5- Apps? We have seen that android and chrome get increasingly popular owing to its ever-increasing base of apps. This is the same reason why Facebook got popular. As Facebook was coded in PHP, this drew crowd of develops to make Facebook apps. Apps, of all sorts, people love them! As we see that Google Plus is extending there is certainly a room for apps in the social networking. If the social network is aided with apps, specially customized for connecting then this surely can be a blast!

6- Business? Till yet there doesn’t seem any room for business profile on Google plus, like Facebook. Facebook, that has particularly earned advertisers as they allow company and small business profile pages for publicity and promotion. I am sure Google has that in mind and it will definitely introduce something relevant to that.

7- Google is experienced! Another reason why I think Google can be a better rival for Facebook this time is it has already experienced failures! Now Google is pretty mature with all those bad experiences and it will definitely take benefits from them to come up with fresh new ideas.

8- Huddle! My best feature in Google Pus is the Huddle!  Huddle allows different people, mostly a particular circle of friends to group message.

Finally I think that Google Plus will succeed. Its new, its more trendy and particularly aided with android! Earlier, Buzz failed because it was just an app like Gmail. But now Google is all the more aggressive with its Social Network! Anyhow, its for time to decide who will actually conquer the stage of social networks!

I heard Google is temporarily shutting down the invitation request for the trial (I did submit a request too yesterday). I don’t like how Google+ shares the similar loo&feel of Facebook because, c’mon Google, I believe you can do better than this. Until I get an invitation I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the better. I hope there’ll be a ‘Dislike’ or ‘-1′ button, as well as to be able to hide selected updates from friends (in facebook hiding an update means hiding all updates from that friend of yours, which feels like a design failure to me)

And I also feel facebook is just getting a more public platform…its almost the whole world there. Google sharing can be more private and more intuitive

Sorry, Google WANTS your data, and questions people who demand privacy.

This is a good article, but with the launch of G+, there seem to have been a lot of conversations about “What does Mark Zuckerburg (or Facebook) think?”, “Is Google+ better than Facebook?” and “Should you now sell your Facebook shares at 100M?”. These are probably the wrong questions to ask. G+ is not a “Facebook Killer.” The real battle is between G+ and Twitter. A longer post on this is here: http://bit.ly/mRGf3M
